[glow=red,2,300]I entered this in Short Story Contest #3 on BZPower. The words in italics are the song lyrics. I believe it qualifies as Fan Fiction, so here goes:[/glow]
Something washes ashore on the island of Mata Nui, but does it bring good? Or unspeakable evil?
Jedas wakes up slowly. Her head is pounding and she can’t figure out where she is. All this snow, ice, and sunshine… this is not like any island she’s ever been to before. She eases herself up off the ground and starts heading up an icy mountain, hoping to get her bearings.
-------------------------------------------------
On the other side of the island, someone else is floating in the water near Ga-Koro, still unconscious. Gali Nuva hears of this from the Ga-Matoran and swims out to bring in the newcomer. She cares for him until he wakes up after an hour or so. At first he’s suspicious, but then he smiles charmingly.
“I am Kralas. And who is this fair maiden I am speaking to?”
Gali smiles in return. “I am Gali, Toa of Water and protector of Ga-Koro. If I may ask, what is your business here?”
“Merely a traveler fallen upon misfortune. My boat was destroyed in a storm of sorts and I must have washed up here.”
“I see. Well, our home is yours for as long as you need.”
“Thank you,” Kralas smiles again. Or is it a smirk?
---------------------------------------------------
Kopaka Nuva gazes lazily over his domain. Nothing exciting had happened around here since the Bohrok were defeated. Suddenly, something catches his eye. He focuses in on it and sees someone trudging up the mountainside. It’s no Matoran… nor is it a Toa or a Rahi, though if he had to guess, it was built more like the latter. Deep charcoal gray in coloring, slightly hunched over, and with hands more like claws, the intruder is unlike anything Kopaka has ever seen. It whips its head around and seems to be looking straight at him. There is a large, diagonal scar across the right eye and face. Curious, he goes to confront this new threat.
Jedas whirls around. It felt like someone was watching her. This place continues to creep her out. There’s an evilness lurking in the air, and she had already fought off some saber-toothed beast. Suspicious, she turns and continues to climb, only to be faced with an avalanche crashing towards her. Thinking quickly, she plunges her hands deep into the side of the mountain just as the wall of snow hits her.
Kopaka looks at the fresh layer of snow. It seems as though his plan worked. The thing was probably buried at the base of the mountain. He starts to make his way down, when the ground starts shaking and he hears a rumbling behind him. He spins around too late to ward off the dark blur attacking him. It crashes into him and the two tumble down the mountain. The force of hitting the ground knocks them apart and Kopaka slams into a tree. He loses consciousness.
Jedas staggers up. Well, that was painful. She pops her neck to both sides and goes over to examine the white being that attacked her. He looks peaceful enough now, but the sword and shield show that he’s a warrior. Looking from him to the mountain, she realizes her mistake. He was just protecting his domain. As she remembers the avalanche, another thought disturbs her: Does he have special abilities too? She thought they were the only ones…
As she stands there contemplating, a Kane-Ra charges out of the bushes and slams into her full force, hurling her against a tree. She cries out in pain, but quickly recovers and starts battling the monster.
Kopaka wakes up in time to see her get thrown aside again. The Kane-Ra then changes targets and starts coming for him. Still feeling woozy, he can’t react fast enough. The beast is going to crush him! What an unworthy end for a Toa… He closes his eyes, but nothing happens. He opens them to see a battered Jedas holding the monster back, inches away from him. This stranger just saved his life.
Jedas starts to tremble with exertion. She can’t hold this thing back much longer, and her powers seem to have deserted her for the time being. Her foot slips and the Kane-Ra takes up the slack, pinning her against a tree. It pushes harder and she gasps for air, darkness creeping into her vision. A gust of icy coldness brushes her face and the pressure stops. Looking down, she sees the monster, frozen. Kopaka moves it aside and the two just stare at each other. Kopaka takes the initiative, “I am Kopaka, Toa of Ice.”
“Jedas,” she manages before collapsing from exhaustion.
Kopaka catches her, picks her up gently, and heads for Ko-Koro. This turned out to be an interesting day.
------------------------------------------------------
Kopaka calls a meeting of the Toa Nuva to discuss this new species of warrior. He relates the events of the day. As Gali listens, she seems to sink deeper into thought. Kopaka concludes his narration, “She said her name was Jedas… Sister Gali, you look like you have something to add.”
Gali nods slowly. “It’s just that… I too have encountered a stranger today, though he seems more Toa-like than this one and much less dangerous. In fact, he is quite polite and has been helping out in the village all day.”
“Strange,” Tahu mumbles. “Do you think the two are connected?”
“That would be the obvious conclusion,” Onua adds, “but they are seemingly unrelated. I mean, how much more different from each other could they get?”
Pohatu grins. “I see your point.”
“Maybe it’s just an omen-sign from the Great Beings that happy-good times are coming,” Lewa laughs.
“Either way,” Kopaka comes back in, ”It might be best to keep the two apart.”
Everyone agrees, and the Nuva go back to their separate Koros.
------------------------------------------------------
Weeks go by with nothing happening but Jedas integrating herself into the daily lives of those around her. The Toa and Jedas become fast friends. She even goes along to help on some of their routine missions. They’re the first friends Jedas ever had, and she was having more fun than she could ever have imagined. She wished she could forget her past and have this last forever…
----------------------------------------------------
Kralas was having a slightly less exciting time. He merely helped the Ga-Matoran with their daily chores, went to a few Kohlii matches, and generally kept a low profile. He listened to the gossip around the village until one day he finally heard what he’d been waiting for:
“Did you hear? There’s some strange, powerful new being helping out the Toa! I hear Kopaka’s pretty fond of her.”
So she did make it after all. At last, he could enact his brilliant plan. This was going to be fun.
-----------------------------------------------------
Jedas wakes up one morning to find all six Nuva standing over her.
“What is it? What’s wrong?”
Tahu is the first to speak, “How could you? We trusted you and let you stay here, and now you stab us in the back! Traitor!”
Tahu lunges towards her, but is stopped by a hand from Onua.
“You can pretend not to know. That’s fine. I’ll just refresh your memory,” Onua speaks dangerously quiet. “Last night, Po-Koro was completely destroyed for no apparent reason. Luckily, all the inhabitants were at the Kohlii stadium for the big match against Ga-Koro.”
“Yes,” Pohatu jumps in. “Where once was light and joy in my fair city, now only darkness falls.”
“You can’t think…” She looks pleadingly at her friends.
“Don’t bother looking to us. Where once was love for you, love is no more.”
“What makes you think it was me?”
“We have a witness,” Kralas steps out from behind the Nuva and smirks at Jedas. “He says that you have the power of disintegration. It’s no surprise that you’ve kept your power hidden… you’ve been planning this all along. ”
.
Her eyes widen, “You…” she whispers. “You mustn’t believe him! He is not to be trusted—“
Jedas stops when she sees the look in Kopaka’s eyes. They were cold with the sting of betrayal. She shrinks away, “Don’t…”
“Say goodbye, Kopaka. She has betrayed us all,” Lewa prods.
“But—“ Jedas starts.
“Don’t say it,” Kopaka states softly.
“I didn’t do it!”
“You try to deny it?! You were caught red-handed!” Pohatu roars.
The Toa start to close in around her as Kralas watches with a satisfied grin on his face. The one person who can stop him is about to be eliminated. His plans go awry, however, when a blinding flash of light appears. It dissipates, but Jedas is nowhere to be found. Kralas is furious and takes off to find her himself.
“These fools are incompetent! I should have known that only I would be able to destroy the legendary Jedas Darklight!” he says through gritted teeth.
---------------------------------------------------
Jedas keeps running, tears burning at her eyes. After all this time together, none of them believed her! She should’ve known better than to let herself get close. It’s too late now, though. She did get too close, and now her heart is broken. The only good thing is that her powers have returned. A big consolation that is…
As she ran, she could hear the Matoran singing a song of mourning and accusation:
These tears we cry
Are falling rain
For all the lies
You told us
The hurt, the blame!
And we will weep
To be so alone
We are lost!
We can never go home…
Jedas feels her heart harden and she stops running. It’s all business now. No more feeling. No more pain. Just the job and the target; and no one is going to stand in her way. She reaches a jungle and lies in wait for the one she knows is coming. It’s time to finish what she started on the boat.
----------------------------------------------------------
Kralas follows Jedas’ trail to the jungles of Le-Koro, where they disappear. He smiles. She’s back to her old self… now the game has really begun. He hears a slight sizzling and dives out of the way as a lightning bolt whizzes by him.
“Come on, you can do better than that!” he taunts.
“I wouldn’t tempt fate if I were you…” Jedas snarls.
The voice seems to come from all around him. He chooses a spot and fires a random disintegrating blast. A cold, hard laugh rings through the forest.
“How pathetic,” the voice comes again, “you don’t even know where I am.”
Kralas starts to get nervous. She isn’t supposed to be this good. He must’ve underestimated her. But it’s no matter… she still can’t beat him. It’s not possible—
His thoughts are interrupted by another blast of lightning, this time it impacts his shoulder and he is thrown to the ground. Where is she? This can’t be the end! He cannot be beaten!
Jedas materializes over him, a ball of electrical energy forming in her upraised hand. Before she has the chance to strike, she is hit with an onslaught of elemental energies- six, to be exact. Her energy shield is barely able to hold it back. The Toa appear out of the labyrinth of trees and vines, weapons raised.
“Step away from him, Jedas! We do not wish to kill you,” Kopaka shouts.
“Speak for yourself, Brother,” Pohatu mumbles.
They cease fire only to find Jedas gone again. Kralas sees his chance and uses his limited powers of telekinesis to ensnare the Toa.
“Hey! Why can’t I move?” Tahu struggles, but can’t break free from the telekinesis. The others try as well and fail.
Kralas laughs harshly. “Silly, gullible Toa. You should have listened to your little friend, but now you have alienated her and there’s no one left to save you. Unless… perhaps she can persuade me to spare your miserable lives. What do you say, Jedas? Come now, I know you’re still here.”
To prove his point, he sends a disintegrating blast at Kopaka, making sure it only grazes his shoulder. The pain is still excruciating to Kopaka, however, and he screams in agony.
There’s a slight rustling and Jedas drops down from the trees.
“So, it all comes down to me then.”
She looks at her former friends -trying not to remember all the good times they had- before glaring icily at Kralas.
“In the end, I’ll be what I will be. No loyal friend was ever there for me… However, I still can’t shake my loyalty, nor can I abandon my friends,” she spreads her arms wide. “Do what you will.”
Kralas laughs maniacally. “Now that’s more like it.”
“No! Brothers, can’t we do something? We are Toa!”
“His hold is too strong, Kopaka. There is nothing we can do.”
“Say goodbye, bounty hunter!”
Kralas fires and his blast hits her full on. It doesn’t have the disintegrating effect, but the outcome is the same. Jedas falls to the ground. Kopaka breaks free from the telekinesis and goes over to her motionless form. Kralas pays no heed. His worries are over.
“All our power and we could do nothing,” Kopaka whispers, cradling her in his arms.
Kralas snorts. “And here I thought my powers had no effect on you. I must say, I’m disappointed, Jedas. You didn’t even try to save yourself.”
Tears roll down Kopaka’s mask, freezing as they hit the ground.
“These tears you cry have come too late, Toa. You should have believed her when you had the chance. All of it was for naught, too. She should’ve known I would kill all of you and take over this island anyway.”
He aims his hand at Kopaka, who glares at him defiantly, again unable to move. Suddenly, Jedas disappears from the ground.
Kralas gasps and steps back fearfully. “Where is she? Where did she go? Is this some trick of yours, Toa?”
“It’s no trick,” a voice hisses in his ear. He tries to escape, but a vice-like grip holds him in place. He hears the sizzling again and feels a burst of electrical energy surge through his body.
“Impossible…” he whispers as he sinks to the ground.
Jedas’ voice haunts him as he feels the life leaving his body:
“It’s too late to take back the lies. The hurt, the blame. And you will weep when you face the end alone. You are lost, you can never go home. Goodbye, assassin.”
Jedas looks at the shocked Toa one last time. Staying here isn’t an option. She got too close and it almost cost her life. Friends are a luxury she can’t afford and they must understand that. Raising her hand in a last sad farewell, she vanishes into the night.
-------------------------------------------------
Kopaka stares silently at the stars. Gali comes over and lays her hand on his shoulder.
“What troubles you, Kopaka?”
“She saved my life twice and I couldn’t even give her the one thing that she wanted: my trust,” he states sadly.
“How were you to know?”
“That’s just it. I shouldn’t have needed to know, I should have just believed. But there’s nothing to be done for it now. She’s gone.”
“You really cared for her, didn’t you Brother?”
“Yes.”
--------------------------------------------------
As Jedas sails across the waters, looking back at the quickly fading Mata Nui, she recalls the last words she said to Kralas. A sad smile comes to her face at the irony, for the words apply to her too.
You are lost, you can never go home…
